Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for an Internship, candidates must hold an undergraduate degree and be enrolled in a full-time graduate study program, pursuing either a master’s degree or a PhD with the intention of returning to full-time studies. There is no age limit for applicants.
Fluency in English is a requirement, while knowledge of languages such as French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Portuguese, and Chinese is desirable. Possessing additional skills like computer proficiency is advantageous.

The WB Internship Program primarily seeks candidates in two areas:
- Operations (Front Line) which includes fields such as economics, finance, human development (public health, education, nutrition, population), social sciences (anthropology, sociology), agriculture, environment, engineering, urban planning, natural resources management, private sector development, and other related fields.
- Corporate support (Accounting, Communications, Human Resources Management, Information Technology, Treasury, and other corporate services).
Interns are compensated with an hourly salary, and in some cases, a travel allowance of up to USD 3,000 may be provided at the manager’s discretion to cover transportation expenses (such as airfare) to and from the duty station city. Accommodation arrangements are the responsibility of the interns. Most internship positions are based in Washington, DC, driven by business needs, with a limited number of opportunities available in the WB country offices. Typically, internships have a minimum duration of four weeks.
The WB Internship is offered twice a year:
- Summer Internship (May-September): Applications can be submitted from December 1 to January 31 each year.
- Winter Internship (November-March): Applications can be submitted from October 1 to October 31 each year. All applications must be submitted online within the specified application period. Applications sent via email will not be accepted.
J1 visa holders must obtain a G4 visa abroad before starting employment or an unpaid internship at the WB.
